Math Basics AF 1. 3
Objective - To understand some BASIC rules of mathematics Objective - To reason with diagrams.
BIG RULES of MATH The SIGN goes with the TERM! No Double Signs!
The SIGN goes with the TERM! Think of EACH TERM individually. Example: 5 + 3 ─ 7 This should NOT be thought of as 5 PLUS 3 MINUS 7 But rather as a POSITIVE 5, a POSITIVE 3, and a NEGATIVE 7
Remove Double Signs To remove double signs, use the Alien Face. The Alien Face is also used when multiplying or dividing numbers with different signs. ▬ ▬
Adding & Subtracting Integers Example: 15 +(– 22) –(– 13) – 4 15 – 22 + 13 – 4 Step 1: Get rid of Double signs! Step 2: Circle each term. Remember: The sign goes with the term. Step 3: Put each term in the correct column. Step 4: Add each column. Step 5: Decide winning team Step 6: Determine the spread. (big number – small number) - + 22 15 4 13 26 28 Winning team: + Spread: 28 – 26 2 Answer: +2
Adding & Subtracting Integers Example: 14 – 27 + 5 – 9 Step 1: Circle each term. Remember: The sign goes with the term. Step 2: Put each term in the correct column. Step 3: Add each column. Step 4: Decide winning team Step 5: Determine the spread. (big number – small number) - + 27 14 9 5 36 19 Winning team: – Spread: 36 – 19 17 Answer: – 17
A Tie? Example: 13 – 12 + 7 – 8 Step 1: Circle each term. Remember: The sign goes with the term. Step 2: Put each term in the correct column. Step 3: Add each column. Step 4: Decide winning team Step 5: Determine the spread. (big number – small number) - + 12 13 8 7 20 20 Winning team: NO WINNER Spread: 20 – 20 0 Answer: 0 A tie means the answer is zero!
