MATH 11 Apprenticeship and Workplace Grade, Angle of Elevation and Distance
Pythagorean Theorem • •
Pythagoras •
• • Slope of a road or other surface • Usually expressed as a percentage • The steeper the slope, the higher the percentage • To find this percentage, multiply the numerical value for slope by 100 • Rise and run must both be in the same units before percent grade is calculated
• Tangent ratio • angle of elevation opp. Θ adj. • The Greek letter theta Θ is used to represent an unknown angle
• Angle of elevation •
• A quad needs to be unloaded from the box of a pickup truck. An aluminum ramp is placed against the truck bed at a slope of 5: 40. What is the angle of elevation of the ramp? • Substitute the known values into the formula. • Convert the fraction to a decimal. •
• Make sure your calculator is in degree mode!!!! • Use the inverse tangent key on your calculator to find the angle of elevation. •
• Angle of Depression • The angle formed between the horizontal and the line of sight while looking downwards. • Drop • The difference in height between one end of an object and the other end; equivalent to the rise.
• The slope of a driveway must have a minimum angle of depression of 1° to allow surface water to drain away from the house. If the end of the driveway is 10 m from the house, how many centimetres does the driveway need to drop in order to maintain proper drainage? Round your answer to two decimal places. •
