錯 卦 Matching Diagrams
• Reversing the essence of a diagram, that is, changing the solid Yang to dashed Yin, and vice-versa反之亦然, reveals a hidden diagram. This diagram is a matching diagram, which works behind the scenes to the original diagram.
• Reading the Diagram • Matching diagrams work like two matching pieces of a picture puzzle. The grooves溝、槽 of one piece fit the protrusions突出 of the other. Protrusions are essentially the opposite of grooves, but once a protrusion fits corresponding groove, the two pieces become inseparable, supporting each other to form the big picture. Likewise, if all the Yang of one diagram fit the Yin of the other, and vice versa, the two matching diagrams become inseparable, working together and supporting each other.
• The Lu履 diagram shows Dui兌(為澤) on the bottom and the Qian乾(為天) on top. It signifies advancement, moving from a low position of the lakes to the high position of the sky. By reversing the Yang and Yin of the diagram, we reveal its hidden matching diagram, Qian(謙). It shows Gen艮(為山) on the bottom and Kun坤(為地) on top. A mountain which humbly hides its might beneath the earth will remain strong for a long time. Therefore, Qian is a beneficial diagram which signifies humility(謙虛). • 有進就有退。
• No actual part of the diagram Qian(謙) can be found on diagram Lu(履). Yet, Lu can not function without the support of Qian. Therefore, when we try to advance, we must never forget to support this advancement with a humble heart. This is the only successful advancement can be achieved.
• Applying the Diagram • When we observe a phenomenon, not only we carefully study the phenomenon itself, but we must also pay attention to its hidden matching diagram that is supporting it from behind the scenes. For example, if we see an excessively extravagant family, then we must realize why it must be like for the family in the future, when the wealth is gone, and the family dissolved. If we see a couple that love each other so much that they must be together at all times, then we must realize the tragedy of separation by death or other circumstances.
• Often, however, the hidden phenomenon behind the scenes may be difficult to observe. In this kind of situation, we can work by observing its more visible matching diagram. We can then deduce(演繹) the hidden phenomenon by inverting the Yang and Yin. For example, in order to observe how a person truly feels about something in his heart, one can tell him stories that make him happy or sad. Then by observing what makes him happy and what makes him sad, one can deduce his true feelings.
