Mastering AO 1 marks Chemistry
What is AO 1? Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures. You usually need to have learnt work to answer AO 1 questions Recall of facts simple e. g. test for oxygen gas complex e. g. explanation of Group 1 reactivity increasing down the group Specified practicals – methods, observations Substitution of values into equations Sometimes difficult to allocate – many grey areas because AO 2 requires application of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures On GCSE papers 40% of the marks are AO 1
What is AO 1? Double Award Unit 2 – Foundation Tier 1 3(c) 4(a) Periodic Table and properties of elements … AO 1 and AO 2 Substitution into an equation … AO 1 Tectonic plate movement … AO 1 What about 4(b) and 4(c)? 6 8(b) 9 Fluoridation of water … AO 1 Reaction of potassium and water … AO 1 and AO 2 Evolution of the atmosphere … AO 1 … and balancing equation How many of these marks are pure recall work that should be learnt?
Importance of learning work Useful to make students realise how important it is to learn their work. Activity – look at last summer’s Double Award Unit 5 FT paper and identify how many AO 1 marks students could access just by learning their work
Unit 5 FT All AO 1 marks
Unit 5 FT All AO 1 marks
Unit 5 FT Correction of errors 1 and 2 classed as AO 1
Unit 5 FT AO 1 marks
Unit 5 FT AO 1 – but could be AO 2?
Unit 5 FT Definitely AO 1
Unit 5 FT AO 2 AO 1 AO 2
Unit 5 FT Both AO 1
Unit 5 FT AO 1 and AO 2
Unit 5 FT Classed as three marks each of AO 1 and AO 2
Unit 5 FT About 20 marks?
Revision and recall • A weak area for many years • Regular 5 minute tests e. g. flame test colours, testing for gases and negative ions • Text tools on the resources part of the WJEC website could be useful in producing quick revision exercises e. g. arranging steps in a practical method in the correct order – www. resources. wjec. co. uk • Analysis of past papers in the weeks before exams … identify easy recall marks, topic areas and total number of marks available
