MASTER DATA DEFINED Master data (Gartner): The core data needed to uniquely define objects (for example, customer, partner, supplier, person, product or service, ledger, asset). It is infrequently changed and is often referenced by business processes and associated with other data types. Master data (Knightsbridge): The combination of reference data (current valued), and reference data object relationships (hierarchies, rules, exceptions) to provide a complete picture of any given level of the enterprise with regard to its objects and relations. – Needed in order to capture business transactions and measure results for these entities – Master data spans all organizational business functions Master data management: Creation and maintenance of master data values and relationships for regular utilization by OLTP and OLAP processes over time. This requires the maintenance and presentation of the current valued reference data as well as historical versions (effectivity windows) of previous values for reference data in forms, formats, and response times appropriate to uses and users.
