Pilgrims Found Plymouth Colony • Settlers came to America seeking riches and religious freedom • 1534 – King Henry VIII broke from Roman Catholic Church; began the Anglican Church • Puritans – wanted to rid Anglican Church of any Roman Catholic influences • Separatists – Puritans who left the Anglican Church; attacked for their beliefs
• Pilgrims – Separatists left England to go to Leyden, Netherlands; didn’t like Dutch influence on children; got charter from London Company to set up colony in VA; John Carver arranged financing
• 1620 – the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England; 100 men, women, and children; stormy; blew ship off course; arrived at Cape Cod; 41 men drew up Mayflower Compact; John Carver became governor of colony
• Plymouth – Pilgrims landed here which was former N. A. village; by spring, almost ½ died; second governor was William Bradford
• Samoset – N. A. who welcomed the Pilgrims • Massasoit – chief of the Wampanoags (wahm-puh-nohags) tribe who controlled southeast MA
• Squanto – taught Pilgrims how to survive; interpreter; Pilgrims called him “a special instrument sent of God” • Thanksgiving – Pilgrims shared harvest of 1621 with Indians • Plymouth – 300 settlers in 1630; 3, 000 settlers in 1660; poor community
