CHARACTERISTICS OF MASS MEDIA are a source of information – we get the latest news from it � are cheap an easily available � communication is mostly one way � their aim is to attract a large audience � influnce society and , in turn, are influenced by society �
PURPOSES OF MASS MEDIA � information function - provide us with different kinds of information (on/about the world, politics, business, sports, the latest inventions etc. ) � educational function – we can widen our general knowledge, widen our horizons � entertaining function - a source of entertainment
NEWSPAPERS / MAGAZINES How can we obtain (get) newspapers? - we can buy them (at the newsagent´s, kiosk, newsstand) - we can subscribe to them - and they are delivered to our houses by a postman or a newspaper boy(girl) - we can read them on the Internet
NEWSPAPERS / MAGAZINES v newspapers are published daily, at weekends v magazines – once a week or a month There are different sorts of articles v on economics, politics, social life, sports v editorials (giving the personal opinion of the editor about st)
TYPES OF NEWSPAPERS 1. Serious newspapers /broadsheets/ the quality press - articles there are written in a serious manner, news are objective � contain more text than pictures � pay more attention to the government or international affairs - rather than to scandal and showbiz news � in Slovakia – Sme, Pravda, Hospodárske noviny � in Britain - The Times, The Guardian
TYPES OF NEWSPAPERS 2. The popular papers / gutter press/ tabloids– v contain shocking stories, especially about people´s private lives, crime, gossip about celebrities or disasters v tabloids tend to be more slangy in their writing style than serious papers v have larger circulation than serious ones v have big headlines to draw readers´ attention and lots of pictures
EXAMPLES OF TABLOIDS � In Slovakia – Nový čas � In Britain - The Sun: Owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. , The Sun is splashy, and trashy newspaper. Published in the U. K. and Ireland, The Sun has the highest circulation of any English-language daily paper in the world. � The Daily Mirror
MAGAZINES � published once a week/month � deal with various articles and stories, international and national news � There are different kinds of magazines for diffferent target groups – e. g. people loving gardening, hunting, fishing, for women, men teenagers or children
TELEVISION � The most popular source of information � It brodcasts different kinds of programmes such as current affairs, breaking news, TV series, sitcoms, quizes, chat shows, documentaries � TV can be divided into non-commercial, owned by state or commercial TV, owned by private companies
STATE- OWNED TV CHANNELS financed from a state budget � TV stations in Slovakia broadcast mostly in the Slovak language, there are some programmes dedicated to ethnic minorities (always subtitled). � Foreign language (with the exception of Czech) movies and shows are dubbed (rarely subtitled). � STV 1, 2 �
COMMERCIAL TV CHANNELS � There are lots of commercial channels in SVK, e. g. Markiza, JOJ, TA 3 etc. � are financed mainly with money obtained from broadcasting commercials / advertisement. � In comparison with the state channels they broadcast programmes of a lower quality
NEGATIVES OF TV � inceasing violence shown on TV, � bad language, � brain rot ( if your mind doesn´t develop) � poor physical health/obesity, � addiction, � it can damage your eyesight.
