Sobering Statistics: • 2 in 3 students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 3 rd grade will end up in jail or on welfare. • Students who do not read proficiently by the end of 3 rd grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of high schools. • 85% of juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, suggesting a close relationship between literacy and crime.
