MOVIES THAT PERPETUATE FURTHER STEREOTYPES ABOUT PROFESSIONALISM & GENDER • Examples of stereotypes • Fun with Dick & Jane, American Gangster • Jane is portrayed as a new house wife who relies on Dick for income. When he loses his job as a result of the stock market crash, Jane is devastated and still looks to Dick for solidarity in how to overcome their unemployment crisis. • Denzel Washington plays Franc Lucas, an American drug dealer. His wife, Laurie Roberts—played by Carla Gugino, plays the role of a loyal, abiding, right-hand house wife.
POLITICAL LOOPHOLES TOWARDS WOMEN • The Invisible War: More than 500 women raped in the army to date. A woman, victim of rape by her senior officer when she was working in the army was interviewed in the movie and she states that she was so dramatically affected by the incident that she had a broken jaw and couldn’t move any of her body parts. She states that even after 11 years of the incident she still has to take a number of medications for anti-depression and various other pains.
