Childhood Mary Mcleod Bethune was born July 10 th , 1875 in Mayesville , South Carolina. When she was born slavery had ended. Mary’s parents were former slaves. Mary’s parents had 17 children. Black and white children couldn’t go to school together , they were segregated Mary went to an African American school called the Scotia seminary. Mary Mcleod Jane Bethune
Becoming an adult She opened a school for African American girls. She moved to Georgia and tried to teach children from the streets on Sunday for a while She moved back to South Carolina after she married Albertus Bethune. Mary Mcleod Jane Bethune
Later years In 1936 Franklin D. Roosevelt gave Mary a job and she trained African Americans. Mary was the highest African American official in the government. Mary died in 1955. The school she started Bethune-Cookman College is still opened today. She worked for education and equal rights for all people. Mary Mcleod Jane Bethune
