Marshmallow Challenge As conducted by tens of thousands of people in every continent – ranging from CFO’s of the Fortune 50 to students at all levels!
Team Norms • Each team member will: – determine the goals/outcomes of the task – play an active role in completing the task • (i. e. all members participate equally) – be individually responsible for some part of the task (i. e. leader, note taker, time keeper, etc. ) – assist teammates in a positive manner – be accepting of all ideas – communicate openly & effectively – collaborate to the best of their ability
Team Materials • • 20 sticks of Spaghetti One yard of tape One yard of string One marshmallow
Instructions 1. GOAL: Build the tallest freestanding structure. – Winning team = tallest structure from table surface to top of marshmallow 2. The ENTIRE marshmallow must be on top. – No cutting or eating part of the marshmallow 3. Use as much or as little of the kit. – – 4. 5. Use as much or as few of the sticks, string & tape Team cannot use paper bag as part of structure Teams may break the spaghetti, string &/or tape Challenge lasts 18 minutes – Teams cannot hold on to the structure once the time runs out

What did you learn? • How quickly did your team collaborate? • Why do Kindergartners perform so well? – No jockeying for power – Build multiple prototypes • Why do recent grads and older adults struggle? – Trained to find the SINGLE, RIGHT plan • High Stakes – does it work? – Not one team had a standing structure • How does this apply to the rest of our life? – Designing a solution requires prototyping (trial & error)
