Uniform Universal rules include: • The regular smart/business dress code for all students that can be found in your handbook and on the website. Please be reminded that there are to be no jeans, trainers, vans, converse, hoodies, avoid “too much flesh” being shown including shoulders and stomachs, no t-shirts, “jeggings” etc • Skirts to be just above the knee at the shortest • Do not wear jackets, hoodies or any outside based clothing around the building • Remove all headphones and put away mobile devices on entering the building or leaving the sixth form • For some practical subjects (including Performing Arts, Sport), for practical lessons you will be required to order Marriotts based kit for your lessons (more details in September). Until this arrives, you will be required to wear all black or your old Marriotts PE kit. Paid Employment We understand that you may need/want to have a part time job whilst you are studying. HOWEVER: • Your school day does not officially finish until 4 pm • You should avoid late nights in the week • You should avoid working more than 8 hours per week in term time • If your work is interfering with your ability to be successful in your studies, do something about it. Short term financial gain is no good if it results in longer term loss. Your timetable For each of your subjects, you will have: • A morning with 3 hours of teaching periods 1 -3 • An afternoon with 1 hour of teaching p 5 Retake GCSE English and Maths lessons take place in period 4. Learning in the Sixth Form will be quite different to your experiences in Years 7 -11 • There is a far greater emphasis on independent learning • You will need to take responsibility • You will be taught well by your teachers, and they will support you, but that is only the start • If there are elements you are less confident in, you will need to practice/read/research using the tools you are guided to, to improve in those areas • A lot of your ‘learning’ will be done outside of lesson time • This will prepare you for next steps; if you are planning to attend University, as much as 75% of your learning may be completed independently “Highly effective leadership has secured rapid improvements in pupils’ progress and attendance. ” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Independent Learning In the Sixth Form, you will be expected to complete a minimum of 1 hour of independent study/homework for each hour of taught lessons; in many cases, more than 1 hour per lesson will be required in order that you are able to achieve your target grades At least one component of this per week will be formally set (on SMHW), reviewed and monitored, as 'homework'. The remainder will be independent study, guided by the class teacher. Homework and independent study set will include, but not be limited to: • Completing exercises from textbooks or online resources, based on recently covered material AND cycling back through previously learnt content • Writing essays/exam style answers about recently covered material AND cycling back through previously learnt content • Reading material such as articles, textbook content or online material, which will then be discussed/questioned/tested on in lesson • Completing formal exam questions • Creating knowledge organisers/mind maps • Applying a mark scheme to a sample answer • Completing coursework • Completing interactive self-marking quizzes • Completing or writing multiple choice tests. “Highly effective leadership has secured rapid improvements in pupils’ progress and attendance. ” Ofsted 2016 Marriotts School: Why go anywhere else! Private study For the first time, you will have periods on your timetable where you are not in taught lessons. These are not ‘free’ periods!
