Phonics • Government Initiative – Letters and Sounds. • Children take part in two separate 30 minute daily phonic session. • One daily whole class session as well as one focussed session pitched to their specific needs.
What is phonics? • Phonics is the understanding of how letters combine to make words. • We teach by slowly creating a working knowledge of the letter sounds. • Although there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, there are more than 40 speech sounds.
What is the Phonics Screening? • At the end of Year 1, all children in the country partake in a Phonics Screening. • This is a formative assessment tool to assess the children’s attainment of Phonics. • This is reported to parents, the LEA and the government. It is used as a means to compare schools and also allows the school to identify gaps in children’s phonics knowledge.
