MARIST COMPLEMENTARY PLAYS vs. 3 -5 -3 DEFENSE Jim Showfety Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line
How Do We Attack a 3 -5 -3? • Have not seen this defense very much. • Similar rules to a 5 -3 or 50 defense. • Important to know what techniques the defense is playing to our TE side. • How aggressive are the corners? • Use “balanced” formations. • If FS is cheating, we may use our TE “over” set. • Count heads.

WHAT ARE OUR COMPLEMENTARY PLAYS VS. 3 -5 -3? • • SPEED OPTION SPEED HALFBACK PASS COUNTER DIVE OUTSIDE VEER TOSS BOOT PASS TOSS HALFBACK PASS SHOTGUN PACKAGE
Speed Option vs. 3 -5 -3 • Good way to get the ball on the perimeter. • FB & HB must be willing to block. FB blocks OLB to FS; HB blocks the pitch player. • QB is pitching off of the end man ON THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE!!! • Play-side Tackle’s rules depend on defense. He will never block the end man on the LOS. • Can be run to SE or TE side.

SPEED HALFBACK PASS vs. 3 -5 -3 • “Homerun” play. • Coaches must see how the CBs are defending the option. • SE must be split wide enough to take the FS out of the play. Show stalk…take off. • HB cannot under throw this pass (he still has the option of running the ball). • Even an incompletion is not a bad thing.

COUNTER DIVE vs. 3 -5 -3 • Nice complement to Triple Option. • Misdirection; especially good vs. aggressive linebackers. • Offensive Tackles must have good feet. • Guards/Tackles are fold blocking. • Center must be able to handle the nose guard by himself. • HB must read center’s block; might “bend” it. • TE turns out on SS.

OUTSIDE VEER vs. 3 -5 -3 • Always run to our TE side. • One gap wider than our normal “triple”. • We like it when the SS (DE) is walked up on the LOS. QB is reading the DE. • Tackle & TE will double-team a 5 tech (G, T, TE will triple-team a 4 tech). • Not a good play vs. 7 tech. • Blocking Back seals the strong-side LB.

TOSS vs. 3 -5 -3 • Easy play to teach; blocking does not have to be great. • HB motion is critical…must “flatten out” once he clears the FB…avoid drifting backwards. • HB must receive the pitch at least as wide as our play-side tackle (preferably even wider). • SE (if play-side) stalks CB. • Blocking Back’s rules depend on formation. He will block either: a) CB to TE side, or b) SS to SE side.
TOSS (cont’d. ) • TE (if play-side) must try to get on outside hip of SS. If SS widens, lock on & run him to sideline. • Play-side Guard/Tackle have “insideoutside” from LB to FS.

TOSS BOOT PASS vs. 3 -5 -3 • • Great complement to Toss. QB must understand he can run the ball. FB, TE, and SE are running routes. Backside Guard is pulling; looking to block end man on line of scrimmage (or the first thing to show)…we make minor changes vs. certain defenses. • Emphasize - Pulling Guard wants outside leverage…don’t hesitate.

TOSS HALFBACK PASS vs. 3 -5 -3 • Good vs. aggressive corners. • HB must understand he can run the ball. • SE shows stalk block, then sneaks behind CB and “settles”. • Effective in red zone.
