Marine viruses • Host cells 내에서만 reproduction이 가능 • Virus의 기원 – Living cells에서 기원되었다고 봄 • 1. highly reduced prokaryotic parasites • 2. cell에서 방출된 genes • 모든 groups의 living organisms을 감염시킴 • Marine virus abundance – Marine prokaryotes보다 10배정도 많음 – 1010 virions/liter in surface waters – 1013/ kg of sediments
Marine viruses의 역할 • 해양에는 매우 다양한 virus가 존재함 – One sample of ocean water or sediment • 100 – 10, 000 different viral genotypes • Marine virus의 역할 – 주로 hosts의 lysis (용해)와 관련되어 있음 – Lysis의 결과: cell death – Bacteria나 다른 marine 미생물의 수를 조절 • 해양미생물 생태계의 구조 변화 – Plankton의 diversity가 virus에 의해 유지될 수 있음 • Red tide (적조)와 같은 algal bloom (주로 한종의 bloom)이 viral infection에 의해 사라질 수 있음 • Lytic cycle (용해성주기) and Lysogenic cycle (용원성주기) • 동시에 사멸될 수 있음 – Global climate change에 관여 • 일부 photosynthetic microbes의 lysis 시 greenhouse gas (dimethyl sulfide) 방출
Marine bacteria (해양박테리아 ) • Marine bacteria의 역할 – – – Primary producers (일차생산자) Decomposers (분해자) Agents in biogeochemical cycles (C or N cycles) 다른 해양생물의 먹이 Modifiers of marine sediments Symbionts and pathogens (agents of disease) • Marine bacteria의 주요 형태 – Rod shape: bacillus – Spherical shape: coccus • Size – Smallest: about 200 nm (0. 2 μm) – Largest: 750 μm diameter (0. 75 mm)
Marine bacteria • 일부 marine bacteria는 일차생산자 (primary producers) – Autotrophs – Inorganic nutrients를 흡수 – Photo-autotrophs or chemo-autotrophs • Photosynthesis (광합성) or chemosynthesis (화학합성) • Other marine bacteria는 heterotrophs – Organic molecules를 섭취 – 외부의 유기물을 cell wall과 membrane을 통해 흡수: Osmotrophy (삼투영양) – 외부의 유기물이 큰 경우 exoenzymes (세포외효소)을 분비, 외부에서 분해 • 이 경우 heterotrophic bacteria는 decomposers (분해자) • 일부 유기물은 bacterial biomass로, 일부는 inorganic molecules 로 분비됨 (primary producers에 의해 이용됨)
Cyanobacteria (남세균) • 가장 널리 알려진 marine bacteria – photosynthetic marine bacteria – Blue-green bacteria or blue-green algae (남조류) – The smallest and the most productive bacteria in plankton communities (plankton 중 가장 작지만 가장 생산성이 높은 bacteria) • Cyanobacteria의 photosynthetic activity • 해양의 유기물 및 산소 생산에 중요하게 기여함 • Photosynthetic pigments – Chlorophyll a, in some chlorophyll b – Accessory pigments: Carotenoids (betacarotens, xanthophyll) and phycobilins (phycoerythrin, phycocyanin) – Eukaryotes와 유사 • 대표종 (속) – Prochlorococcus – Synechococcus – Oscillatoria
Genus of cyanobacteria • Prochlorococcus – 바다에서 가장 많이 존재하는 생물체로 알려짐 • 지구상에서 가장 풍부한 photosynthetic organism • 아마도 지구상에서 가장 풍부한 생물 종: 1027 individuals – 지구상에서 가장 작은 photosynthetic organism: • 0. 5 – 0. 8 μm – Only species of the genus (단일종) • Prochlorococcus marinus – 1986년에 처음 발견 – First culture: 1988
Genus of cyanobacteria • Prochlorococcus – Non-nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (질소고정을 하지 않음) – 열대의 nutrient-poor open ocean에 잘 적응: How? • 작은 크기, 따라서 높은 표면적 비율: nutrient가 부 족한 환경에서 유리 (Their small size, and therefore large surface-to-volume ratio, gives them an advantage in nutrient poor water) • 적은 양의 nutrient를 요구 (They have a very small nutrient requirement) – 열대 ocean의 primary production 의 30 -80%를 차지 – 지구 대기 산소의 약 20%를 생산
Prochlorococcus
Genus of cyanobacteria • Oscillatoria – important in the tropical open ocean – 세포들의 chain인 single long filaments 형태: colony (군체) 형성 – N 2 fixation을 할 수 있음 • 따라서 질소가 부족한 열대지역에서 많이 분포 함
Oscillatoria
Oscillatoria
Genus of cyanobacteria • Synechococcus – No nitrogen fixation – Picoplankton size (0. 2 – 2 µm) – 열대 및 온대지역, both coastal and oceanic waters의 euphotic zone에 주로 분포 • Synechococcus: nutrient-rich areas • Prochlorococcus: nutrient-poor areas – Synechococcus의 밀도: 106 cells ml-1까지 분포 – 바다에서 주요 primary producer
Synechococcus
Other Photosynthetic Bacteria • Purple and green sulfur or non-sulfur bacteria – Anaerobic

Chemosynthetic Bacteria • 대부분의 해양 waters 나 sediments에는 빛이 비치지 않음 • 일부 bacteria는 빛이 없는 환경에서도 autotrophic (Chemosynthetic bacteria) – Energy source 로 빛 대신 환원된 inorganic chemicals을 이용 – Ammonium (NH 4+), sulfides (S 2 -), sulfur, nitrites (NO 2 -), hydrogen (H 2), ferrous ion (Fe 2+)를 이용 • CO 2 + H 2 O + reduced inorganic compounds CH 2 O + oxidized inorganic compounds • Chemosynthesis는 photosynthesis보다 훨씬 효율이 낮다 – 매우 많은 양의 reduced inorganic compounds 가 없으면 생장속도 가 매우 느림 • Chemosynthetic bacteria는 hydrothermal vents (열수구) 주 변에 많이 분포
