Marine litter data gathering and population of databases
Marine litter data gathering and population of databases EMODnet CHEMISTRY 3 First Annual Meeting, Risø Campus, Roskilde, Denmark 6 th - 8 th February, 2018 Alessandra Giorgetti, M. Eugenia Molina, Matteo Vinci, Alberto Brosich Morgan Le Moigne, Francois Galgani Dick Schaap OGS IFREMER MARIS The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is financed by the European Union under Regulation (EU) No 508/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 May 2014 on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
Marine Litter – tender specification Focus on gathering data, generating data products on a European scale, and publishing data and data products on: Beach litter (nets, bottles etc. ) Seafloor litter (i. e. litter collected by fish trawl surveys) Micro litter (microplastics) Not on litter in biota It is stipulated that digital layers of plastic or litter must be available after the first year Approach discussed at TG ML 2
Proposed approach Opt for developing two central EMODnet internet databases: one for beach litter, modelled after the OSPAR-MCS approach one for seafloor litter, modelled after the ICES-DATRAS approach Arrange data exchange mechanisms and cooperation with the relevant regional systems, their responsible managers and related networks Encourage further population of the existing systems by organisations in the relevant regions Set up and operate central submission facilities for covering submissions by organisations in regions that fall outside existing systems Develop search and display services (including maps) on the central EMODnet validated databases 3
Present situation – beach litter EMODnet beach litter database structure finalized
Present situation – beach litter Regular harvesting from OSPARMCS. Started agreement with OSPAR about the set up of a web service Data ingestion facility based on OSPAR data. Data are converted to an ASCII format file and then inserted into database using an application written in Java Quality control and harmonization of data performed during the ingestion process to remove duplicates and to correct inconsistencies De. Fish. Gear (Adriatic-Ionian region) following OSPAR data format. Common ingestion process under agreement with partnership Data ingestion facility can cover additional data providers 5
Present situation – beach litter Reference lists of beach litter categories taken into consideration : Master List published in ‘Guidance on Monitoring of Marine Litter in European. Seas’ (Galgani et al. , 2013). Ospar beach litter list published in ‘Guidelines for Monitoring Marine Litter on the Beaches in the OSPAR Maritime Area’ (2010) UNEP list of Marine litter characterization published in ‘UNEP/IOC Guidelines on Survey and Monitoring of Marine Litter’ (2009) Data gathered into the database maintains original data categories. Mapping tables between categories are created in order to produce further products in the future First data analyses were performed using Postgre. SQL-Post. GIS and QGIS 6

Present situation – seafloor litter Litter quantification: a very challenging issue ICES Both subcategory and category* Medits Subcategory Category De. Fish. Gear Subcategory Count Weight *ICES “Parameter” term can be equivalent either to category or subcategory Mandatory Non-Mandatory Report at least one combination Not reported Litter categorization flexible in two distinct tables maps per category
Present situation – seafloor litter Regular harvesting from ICES-Datras through a fully functioning web service. MEDITS data format has been considered and mapped to ICES-Datras and EMODnet format De. Fish. Gear data format has been analyzed and compared to ICES-Datras. Adjustments will be done for the ingestion of comparable information De. Fish. Gear data flow should be further discussed
Present situation – seafloor litter Data ingestion is performed converting the xml file from ICES web service into database entities, then inserted into database using a Java application Data ingestion facility will cover additional data providers Formal contacts with MEDITS already set up to evaluate data availability from Member States Taking on board PERSEUS as next step
Present situation – seafloor litter Reference lists of seafloor litter categories taken into consideration : Master List published in ‘Guidance on Monitoring of Marine Litter in European Seas’ (Galgani et al. , 2013). The reference list of seafloor litter categories from ICES-Datras vocabularies (C-TS-rev, RECO-LT) MEDITS list of litter typology as described in MEDITS Handbook, version 8, 2016 Data gathered into ML databases maintain original data categories. Mapping tables between categories will be created in order to develop products in the future.

Micro litter - proposed approach For micro litter we propose to adopt and adapt Sea. Data. Net infrastructure and standards: CDIs include micro litter metadata, no change ODVs extending ODV mandatory fields with additional selected fields necessary to describe marine micro litter (category, size, count, … and shape, color, …) The approach was presented to TG ML (feedback from Germany and HELCOM) The reviewed version was also positively discussed at JPI Oceans BASEMAN 2/5/2018 18
Interaction with JRC and TG ML JRC has mandate to develop Baselines from beach litter data collected by MS and from various sources, covering period 2012 -2016 EMODnet and JRC closely collaborates in collating and harmonizing data. Win-win interaction For sea floor litter a dedicated meeting is planned (envisaged date is 24. 27. 4. 2018 in Bremerhaven, Germany) For micro litter, TG ML is planning a position paper to clarify the situation in view of MSFD. There are many activities ongoing, but, while some data quality issues exists, there is no QA/QC system
