MELTEMI The overall objective of the MELTEMI project is to enhance the legal framework

MELTEMI The overall objective of the MELTEMI project is to enhance the legal framework and increase the capacity of public authorities, stakeholders and society at large on mitigating marine litter pollution. Along with the assessment of marine litter in beaches and sea, the project foresees an active engagement of the society and the key-players; this will be achieved by informing, ‘educating’ training and networking them on a science and policy assessment framework of marine litter. As main outputs MELTEMI will: • Create a long-term transnational network of educators, managers and policy makers in the 4 countries that are involved in all legal and policy aspects of marine litter assessment and management. The project’s main target groups will be the public authorities, the local society and the schools. The MELTEMI’s approach is to enhance the transnational cooperation through the training and networking of the public authorities and establish a network. A series of national training sessions and workshops (including web-based interviews) will be organized towards increasing the capacity of both the society (local society, local economy, citizens, schools etc. ) and public authorities in delivering effective governance on marine litter. The innovative part in MELTEMI is that the proposals for NAPPs and the TAPP, will be made by the key stakeholders and decision makers in each area/country and would be adopted at higher level and can be thus in use well beyond the projects life. The active participation of society, stakeholders and decision makers to the process will ensure this sustainability of results even after the end of the project and transferability to other areas.
