Reasons for existence of research gaps Insufficient or imprecise information Biased information Inconsistency or unknown consistency Not the right information (wrong population or wrong outcome) Methodological limitations Study results not generalizable Research has not been done Research has been done, but not published Research has been done and published, but it has not been identified Insufficient information on which to base a recommendation (for example, due to inadequate reporting) • the results were inconclusive or inconsistent • the research is out of date • • • Robinson K. A et. al, 2011 4

Why we need to identify and address research gaps? • Identification of research gaps

Why we need to identify and address research gaps? • Identification of research gaps has the potential to provide a better understanding of what is missing and/or uncertain • Provide guidance on evidence based decision making on polices and practice, research planning and prioritization • Audiences including general public, researchers, funders, clinicians, advocacy groups, and patients could use information about research gaps to understand areas of uncertainty 5

Study 1 : Methods in identifying & displaying gaps in health research Aim: Describe the different methods to identify and display gaps in health research Methods: Scoping review performed using the methodology outlined by Arksey and O’Malley Search Strategy including scientific databases, grey literature, hand searches and expert consultations Expected outcome: An overview of different methods reported on identifying gaps in health research 8

Study 2: Perceived needs of key informants on methods of identifying and displaying gaps

Study 2: Perceived needs of key informants on methods of identifying and displaying gaps in health research Aim: Methods: Participants for Survey and Semi – structured Interviews Consumers ( general public, patients and caregivers) , Clinician ( Health Professionals), Trialists, Policy maker, Researchers, Research funder, Government bodies Methods : Semi-structured Interview • Develop semi-structured interview guide and obtain consent to record interview • Transcribe using Nvivo • Thematic coding Quantitative Survey • Develop questionnaire based on interviews • Collect responses using online tool e. g. survey monkey • Validate questionnaire Expected outcome: a validated questionnaire on key stakeholders’ perceived needs for, strengths of, and barriers to identifying and displaying gaps in health research Cumulative synthesis of both techniques 9

Study 3 : Gaps in Health Research in Action Aim: Develop methodological recommendations, including reporting guidelines, for identifying and displaying gaps in health research. Methods: Proof of concept study will be developed using case studies to illustrate the different aspects of the project. Expected outcome: Propose methodological recommendations including reporting guidelines 10
