Marie Curie Physicist and scientist Marie Curie was born in Poland on the 7 th November 1867. She was originally called Marie Skłodowska. She lived in Poland until she was 22 and at the age of 10 her sister died two years later her mother died. Marie was interested in physics when she was a girl. She was top of her class and graduated at the age of 15. She then went on to study at a school in Paris, France. She eventually left Poland went to get higher degrees and to do her important scientific work. Marie Curie was once told she wasn’t allowed to go to university Marie did a number of great things. One of which was that she researched radioactivity with her husband Pierre Curie. She used her own studies to find a new treatment for cancer. She also was the first person to win a nobel prize and the first person to win two nobel prizes. Curie also discovered radium. This is a very dangerous metal but it is used to kill cancer cells. However many of the people who worked with radium got bone cancer. Did you know? Marie Curie soon became to lose her sight. The doctors and surgeons tried to help bring back her sight but this did not help. Curie knew that she was unwell because of being exposed to much to radium but she did not admit this to herself neither did the others. Her health became much worse but the surgeons did not tell her nor the public what was going on. At the age of 66 Curie died and was buried next to her husband in Sceaux, France. Marie Curie will also be remembered. Marie Curie had two daughters: Irene and Eve
