Facts § Maria Sklodowska Curie was born in Poland on November 7 th 1867 § She was Scientist and a first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics § Both her parents were teachers § Her mother was a headmistress and her father taught Maths and Physics
Interesting facts • She is the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two separate sciences • She did her most important work in a shed • She added two elements to the periodic table • Her notebooks are still radioactive
Radioactivity • Marie and her husband created a theory of Radioactivity They discovered two new elements : radium and polonium
Radium • Radium discovered by Marie is one of the most radioactive and dangerous metals • Radium is now used for many things • For example doctors use it for killing cancer cells • Marie used her research to develop portable x -ray machines in order to help soldiers on the battlefield

Fund Raising • After World War 1, Marie started to raise money for a hospital • The hospital raised money for the radiation research • She collected enough money and equipment for a new laboratory • She also supported world peace by serving on the council of the League of Nations
How she died • Near the 1920’s , Curie and many of her colleagues began to suffer from symptoms of cancer • Carie began to loose her sight and surgeries did not help • Doctors diagnosed her with blood anemia that happens when someone is exposed to too much rarioactivity but doctors didn’t tell her what was going on • She died when she was 66 years old and her belongings will be radioactive for another 1, 500 years
