The Other America • Book written by Michael Harrington exposing the widespread poverty still experienced in America • Public shocked by pervasiveness of problem • Generated discussion on government responsibility to address inequality • How could they not see it?
The Other America • Hard to define • What did poverty mean? • Many were old or very young so they stayed where they were. • Cheap goods made hiding poverty easier • Racism! • Segregation • Different areas/neighborhoods in town • Migrant farm workers
The Other America • Move to the suburbs left many behind in inner cities • Didn’t see it because they didn’t live there anymore • Housing Act of 1949 and the “Projects” • Slums torn down for urban renewal efforts • Not enough new low income housing built to replace those torn down • Many left homeless or packed into overpopulated and uncompleted “projects” creating new slums • American Indians abandoned
