March 2007 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -07/0419 r 2 Abstract With the 802. 11 n effort nearing completion and new market requirements being identified that suggest a need for data rates at or above 1 Gbps for WLANs, it is time to initiate a Study Group to capture new requirements and determine the type of future work necessary to meet those requirements. March 2007 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -07/0419 r 2 Next Generation Timeline • 802. 11 n expected to reach sponsor ballot in September 2007 and be approved as standard by 2 Q 2008. • 802. 11 WNG has reviewed several proposals regarding need for increased performance of 802. 11 to meet ever increasing data rate and Qo. S requirements. • ITU-R WP 8 F on IMT-Advanced timeline requires 1 Gbps pedestrian solution standard by 2010. • Next Generation WLAN SG starts in May 2007, proposes PAR in November 2007, and task group begins work in March of 2008. • Standard ready for balloting by end of 2009 with final approval by end of 2010 in time for IMT-Adv.
