Marc Newson By Joanne Johnson

All about Marc Newson was born in 1963 in Sydney, Australia. His Mother is originally from Greece. Marc has lived in London since 1997. He also owns a house in Paris, Marc is a successful industrial designer who works in aircraft design, product design, furniture design, jewellery and clothing. He incorporates a design style known as biomorphism to his various designs. This style uses smooth flowing lines, translucency, transparency and the absence of sharp edges to create a beautiful ergonomic design. He describes his 1988 Embryo chair as ‘ one of the first pieces where I hit upon a discernable style. ’

Newson’s Childhood Marc’s childhood was spent travelling Europe and Asia, this was before he went to Sydney College of the Arts to study jewellery and sculpture. He started experimenting with furniture design as a student and after graduating in 1984, he was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council, he staged an exhibition featuring the Lockheed Lounge at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney.

More about the designer More recently, his work has become amongst the highest selling in auctions. His Lockheed Lounge was designed in 1986 shortly after he graduated from school and one of the items that established him as a designer. He sold it for $968, 000 at Sotheby’s in 2006. At that year’s Design Miami fair he produced 12 Chop Top tables, all of which sold out in 20 minutes at an estimated $170, 000. In 2005, he was selected as one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people of the year.

Creative Director In 2006, Marc was appointed Creative Director of Qantas Airways and continued working on the A 380 interiors and airport lounges. He designed the Marie – Helene de Taillac jewellery store in Tokyo and the Azzedine Alaia shoe boutique in Paris. He created a limited edition champagne magnum container for Dom Perignon. He was awarded the Designer of the Year prize at Design Miami.

A Magnum presentation set for Dom Perignon in 2006. The Dish Doctor for Magis in 1997. The MN bicycles for Biomega in 1999. The Scope series of bags for Samsonite. Cookware for Tefal. Items for Alessi. The 021 C Concept Car for Ford Motor Company. Clothes for clothing company G – Star Raw. The business class seat ‘Skybed’ for Qantas, where he also heads up the interior design team for the Qantas A 380 to be delivered in 2008. The Qantas first class lounges in Melbourne and Sydney.

Restaurant spaces he has designed include: • Lever House Restaurant and Bar, New York (2002 and beyond. ) • Canteen, New York (1999 – 2004. )

Influential Designs Marc Newson is one of the most accomplished and influential designers of his generation. At 43, he has already worked across a wide range of disciplines to create everything from chairs, household objects, a bicycle and a concept car to restaurants, a recording studio and interiors of private and commercial jets, for clients based in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.
