*The Compass Rose • • Used to show directions Four cardinal directions –N, S, E, W Combination directions– NE, SW, NW Can go more detailed – NNE, SSW
*Map Terms • Legend or Key—usually the bottom corner, explains symbols, shading, colors
*Map Terms cont. • Scale—compares distance on the map and relates it to a distance on the earth • Larger scale=more detail, small scale=less detail
*Map Terms cont. • Latitude—imaginary lines that run east and west but measure north and south from the equator = 0 degrees latitude – Lines are parallel, never touch – 23 N and S—Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn – 66 N and S –Arctic and Antarctic Circles
*Map Terms cont. • Longitude—imaginary lines running from the poles that measure distance east and west of the prime meridian - 0 longitude – Lines get closer as they get to the poles
