MAP-IT Project RN-BSN Program Jasmin Smith, RN Health Sciences Division College of Central Florida Abstract Causes of problems Being healthy is considered a basic human right of all individuals (Dreher & Skemp, 2011). When one thinks of health, they usually focus on lifestyle choices, weight, and existing conditions, such as diabetes, and not so much about if they are prepared to respond to a disaster; although, this can effect their lives just as much as any of the other health areas. In the past couple years active shooter incidents have risen to all time highs, with no decline in sight (Date, Thomas, & Levine, 2016). In order to respond to this new “epidemic” communities must be trained to react when active shootings occur, Marion County has never experienced a mass active shooter situation and the community seems to be unaware, or in denial of the need to have an emergency action plan. Education is available through the Marion County Health Department, however limited class, limited offerings, and small community reach are currently being experienced. so fatalities can be decreased and awareness increased. The first proposed area to start is with the Emergency Action Plan to address Preparedness * Collaborate with hospital of employment to revamp, or create an Emergency Action Plan * Survey staff to see how many are aware of the EAP community of healthcare workers.
