• A map scale represents the Earth’s surface drawn smaller than it really is. A map is drawn to scale. Scale means that a small distance on the map stands for a much larger distance on the Earth’s surface

STATEMENT SCALE • This means that 1 cm on the map stands for 50 km on the Earth’s surface. • Eg. On a map, if Ladner and Tsawwassen were 3 cm apart and the statement scale was 1 cm: 10 km what would the actual distance be? Eg. 1 cm : 50 km Answer: 30 km between Ladner and Tsawwassen

LINE SCALE 50 100 – this is a special kind of ruler to use with the map 150 200 250 km It is still “every cm = 50 km, but this time all you have to do is take a piece of paper, place the edge of the paper between the two places you are looking at, and make a mark for each space. Then take the paper and place it along the line scale (one place at 0 km) and estimate the distance

0 50 Ladner 100 150 200 250 km Whistler If this were correct, then the distance between Ladner and Whistler would be about 225 km
