Map and Map Interpretation 2542402 Lesson 5 : Scale and distance Jittrapon Soontorn Social Studies Program

Meaning of scale • Scale refer to ration between the simulate thing and real thing. • The simulating mostly smaller than the reality such as, • 1: 16 • Mean 1 unit of simulate thing equal to 16 unit of real thing.

Meaning of scale •

Meaning of scale • Comparing to Royal Monument in Rajabhakti Park • The average height of the monuments equal to 15 meters. • If Thai people have average height about 150 cm. • What is the scale of these monuments?

Meaning of scale •

Meaning of scale •

Dividing map by scale • Large scale map • Medium scale map • Small scale map

1: 1 1: 2 1: 10

Large scale map • The map which has larger scale than 1: 75, 000 • Such as, 1: 50, 000, 1: 25, 000 • Covered small area in 1 map sheet • High resolution in spatial detail.

Medium scale map • Map scale between 1: 75, 000 and 1: 600, 000 • Such as, 1: 100, 000, 1: 250, 000 • Covered larger area in 1 map sheet • less spatial detail.

Small scale map • The map which has smaller scale than 1: 600, 000 • Such as, 1: 1, 000, 1: 2, 500, 000 • Covered very large area in 1 map sheet • Low resolution. • Low spatial detail.

Ex. Map scale

Ex. Map scale

Calculating distance • In 1: 50, 000 scale map • If the distance in map is 6 c. m. • What is the distance in the real world?

Calculating distance •

Example • In 1: 50, 000 scale map • Map distance = 1 unit • Ground distance = 50, 000 unit in reality • Map distance and Ground distance • must use the same unit to prevent the confusion. 1: 50, 000 in Thailand, usually use centimeters unit

What happen when the maps have no scale?

Type of map scale Numerical Scale • Showing by using the Ratio or Number of the map scale. • Usually use in various maps • Because numerical are the universal language • Everyone can read and use these kind of scale

Type of map scale • Numerical Scale • How to set the scale. • Always set the value of map distance unit (simulate side) as 1 • Please Notice, • Map distance unit and Ground distance unit • Must be in the same unit.

Type of map scale • Numerical Scale in L 7018 map series

Type of map scale • Verbal Scale • To describing the map scale by using language • Local language: Thai, Japanese, Chinese • Universal language: English 1 เซนตเมตร ตอ 500 เมตร 1 centimeters per 500 meters

Type of map scale • Verbal Scale • Have to identify the unit of scale in the verbal scale • Then in these kind of scale • Map distance unit and Ground distance • Can be in the different unit • User can read and understand

Type of map scale • Limitation of Numerical Scale and Verbal Scale • If the map user have using the map in the different ways. • Photocopy • Scan to digital format • What will happen next? Zoom in Zoom out

Limitation of Numerical Scale and Verbal Scale

Type of map scale • Graphic Scale • Another way to showing the map scale is using graphic or figure. • Drawing as the ruler in various kind of units. • Graphic map scale has the advantage in some way • Zooming or changing map scale • The ruler always keeping in the right ratio.

Type of map scale • Graphic Scale
