SOCIETY AND POLITICS UCEAP New Zealand
MAORI (TANGATA WHENUA) New Zealand has a shorter human history than any other country. Maori travelled to NZ from Polynesia over several purposeful explorations by waka, beginning in around 1250 AD. Te Tiriti O Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) was signed between the Crown and various Maori chiefs in 1840. Both groups signed the document in good faith but there was never a true meeting of the minds over what the Treaty meant. The Maori version & English version say different things due to translation issues. The Treaty led to massive British immigration and poor treatment for Maori. Big gap in life expectancy, health, education and employment.
GENDER, SEX AND SEXUALITY New Zealand is pretty progressive Marriage equality legislated since 2013 It is illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender, sex or sexuality Please practice safe sex! § Condoms are available at all supermarkets, convenience stores, petrol stations and pharmacies. NZ has rich LGBTQIA+ communities – get involved! Sex/gender-based violence will not be tolerated
NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT § Prime Minister is usually the leader of the party that wins the most seats in the House of Representatives. § If no party has a majority, a coalition is formed. Seats in Parliament divided up by the % of Party votes received. § Two major political parties – National & Labour, with 4 -5 smaller parties that usually join with one of the larger ones to form a coalition. § Prime Minister – Jacinda Ardern § Deputy Prime Minister – Winston Peters
CURRENT ISSUES Medicinal cannabis Euthanasia Indigenous issues Asylum seekers and refugees Youth Poverty Homelessness #Me. Too
