For materials which do not display a typical melting point, softening point is used to characterize the tendency of the material to flow at elevated temperatures encountered in service. Ball Centering Guide, Brass Thermometers (ASTM 7 F, 8 F) Hot Plate with Stirrer q USP Glycerin q Stir Bar q Beaker, 600 -ml Pyrex q Silicon Grease Special Instructions Environmental Manual Softening Point Determination using Ring and Ball Apparatus Select appropriate thermometer: 1 2 Place thermometer in designated hole in Ring Holder Assembly. 3 Fill beaker to 500 -ml mark with glycerin. 4 Lightly grease brass pouring plate with silicon grease to prevent sticking. 5 Place ring on pouring plate. 6 Pour a slight excess of heated sample into ring and allow to cool for 30 minutes. 7 Add stir bar to beaker with glycerin. 8 Place beaker on heater plate in hood, turn on stiring. 9 Adjust heat so that temperature increase 5°C (9°F) per minute (set at around 300°C). 10 Remove any excess sample from outer portion of ring with knife or razor and flatten top of sample so that flush with ring. 11 Place ring with sample in appropriate hole in Ring Holder Assembly. Refer to picture below for correct placement of components. 13 Place ball in center of ball centering guide. 14 Lower Ring Holder Assembly into beaker on hot plate. 15 Observe thermometer reading to ensure temperature rise is within limits – adjust if needed. 16 Record the temperature reading at the instant the sample surrounding the ball touches the bottom plate of the Ring Holder Assembly. 17 Report result to nearest whole degree.
