1 B – How does the Bible define the mission directives of Christ’s Church? MISSION DIRECTIVE #1: Love One Another, John 13: 34 -35 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. ” Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

MISSION DIRECTIVE #3: Equip for Service, Ephesians 4: 11 -16 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ…. . 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. The Power of An Epoch “There are certain events that occur so rarely in history that when they do, cultures and generations are transformed for all time. We call these event eras “Epochs”. An epoch is a cultural advancement that leaves and indelible mark upon the world so that the world is never again the same. An epoch experience is a giant leap in the intellectual and cultural development of humanity. To those of us who have been fortunate to encounter a global epoch and transformed by the experience, we cannot help but view the preepoch culture as anything other than mundane and antiquated. ” (e. Shift by David A Posthuma, pg 9) Let’s now see some examples of historic epochs >> Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

2 B – The Current Epoch The current epoch is distinguished by the decline of a television-influenced society, and the rise of an internet-influenced society. These two cultures hold values that are opposed to one another. >> 60 -Minutes millennial test-market interviews Let’s now contrast Boomer v Millennial values >> Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

Use tablets in our services to encourage interactivity, not lecture rows Pray for one-another at our tables Take Communion at our tables Use live question submission (i. e. , Google Slides) E-blast Sunday preparation lessons (i. e. , “Bring something to the table”) Hold discussion sessions at our tables Make use of application stations Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

4 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Authority & Truth” I think the most

4 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Authority & Truth” I think the most important thing we can do, is what we are doing already, teach verse-by-verse through Scripture so that the Word of God, through the work of the Holy Spirit, speaks for itself. Personal perspectives on topics will not be valued by Millennials. Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

5 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Find Information” • Challenge Millennials to investigate

5 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Find Information” • Challenge Millennials to investigate specific Biblical information on their own (Mid-week dig deeper worksheets? ) • Millennials often equate their spiritual experiences with truth; encourage them to share their experiences, but challenge them to test their experiences by God’s Word. Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

6 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Missional Impact” Millennial churches offer many opportunities

6 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Missional Impact” Millennial churches offer many opportunities for personal participation in local and global mission opportunities (i. e. , “glocal”). Unfortunately, Millennials tend to value “Social Justice” far more than evangelism (e. g. , They have been brainwashed to believe they should never impose their beliefs unto others…they prefer the John 13 mandate over the Matthew 28 mandate). Example: Feeding the poor Example: Installing fresh water pumps Example: Building homes for the poor or building orphanages Example: Random Acts of Kindness Example: Teaching English as a second language Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

7 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Global Perspective” Millennial relationships are formed around

7 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Global Perspective” Millennial relationships are formed around shared values, not shared geography. While the Boomer generation values building local community churches, Millennials can participate live with churches and/or Christians all over the planet. A good example is my son Joshua is a Chess Master. He has many friends who share his passion for chess. However, most of his friends reside throughout the country and the world. Wherever we travel, Joshua is meeting with his friends for lunch or visiting them at their homes. How does this value impact Manna? Manna should consider planning short-term mission projects each Summer that Millennials and other could participate within. Fund raising strategies must take place throughout the preceding year. Manna ought to also plan a local mission outreach once each month. NOTE: Manna needs to form a Glocal Missions Leadership Team of oversee these initiatives. Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

8 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Your Truth” Millennials have been taught by

8 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Your Truth” Millennials have been taught by their culture that there is no objective truth. They equate experience and perceptions as “their truth”. One Millennial said to me about her discouragement during a Christian leadership conference, “It does not take a real Christian to put on a Christian show, I want something more real”. Millennials will not be entertained into a relationship with Christ. Neither will they be rationalized into a relationship with Christ. They must experience Christ through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in and among the people who comprise our Church…. Doubting Thomas said he must “see to believe”. Millennials tell us they must “experience to believe”. This then, impacts how we do worship, and how we interact with Millennials during social periods. Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

8 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Your Truth” 1. They Value: Emotive and

8 B – SENSATIVITY TO MILLINNIAL VALUES: “Your Truth” 1. They Value: Emotive and introspective worship songs and meditation moments 2. They Value: Authenticy and vulnerability in their relationships 3. They Value: Honest and inter -personal prayer moments that provide meditative time for the Holy Spirit to speak to their spirits 4. They Value: Application of “a” truth in the moment 5. They Value: Being an extension of God’s love to others (i. e. , being missional) Manna Strategy Retreat, Q 1 2017

Action Points q We need to migrate Manna’s worship from “singing songs in the living room” to spirit enriched praise and worship. q We need to build-in more vulnerable “moments” into our worship community. q We need to evaluate all that Manna does and will do, through Millennial “Fresh Eyes”. q We need to become an intentional missional community that includes a leadership team to plan and oversee glocal missional opportunities.
