�The Magdeburg bridge is a unique construction, which is used not for cars and trains, and for barges, ships and pedestrians. It is the largest water bridge in Europe.
Where? �Magdeburg bridge is situated near Magdeburg in Germany
When? �Construction of the bridge was planned already in the beginning of the XX-th century. By 1938 the first stage of the project was carried out. But then the Second world war began, and a long break was followed in the works. Construction was resumed only in 1997 and lasted for six years. In October 2003 it was the opening of the bridge with the launch of its first barges.
Why? �Magdeburg water bridge has a great practical importance for inland navigation of Germany. It passes over Elba and connects two major water arteries of the country Mittelland Canal and the Elbe. Havel Canal. This bridge saves ships from having to make a long and sometimes dangerous crossing the river.
How? � 24 000 tons of steel, 68 000 cubic meters of concrete and about half a billion Euro were spent for construction of the Magdeburg Bridge
�The bridge is opened for tourists. There are Hiking and Biking trails, Parking for cars and even a small Museum where you can learn about the history of construction.
