Managing Behavior In the Young Learners Classroom By: Yonnique Wilson
Definitions "Classroom management refers to the ways in which student behaviour, movement and interaction during a lesson are organized and controlled by the teacher” Richards (1990, 10) Discipline means "To maintain order and to keep the group on task and moving ahead, not to spot and punish those students who are misbehaving. “( Greenwood and Parkay, 1989)
Create Classroom Rules For young learners rules should be limited to 3 -5 Rules should be posted where the rules can be seen by all learners Rules should be discussed daily with students, as well as, consequences Include students in rule making (if possible)
Seat Students Intentionally The classroom should be student centered Students should be able to collaborate with each other Grouping students together works well for assigning table points and things to do as a team
Have Classroom Rewards Reward students as a class and individually for following the rules Class Dojo is a fun reward system that allows for parent involvement Let students take responsibility for helping create rewards Ensure that students are aware of rewards in the classroom
Give Students Choices Students learn in different ways so teach to their strengths Allow for different ways to learn material Give students seat options (floor, cushion, under desk) for different activities Give options for assignments to allow students to show you they understand the information
Lesson Plan With Your Students in Mind No one knows your students like you do Plan activities that you know they will engage in Differentiate activities for students so that they will feel successful
Remember Most students are not defiant: be specific in your directions to avoid misbehavior due to confusion Keep calm in the classroom: students sometimes misbehave because they know you have lost control
