Internet vs. the Wonderful WWW z Internet - An internetworked group of one or more computers y Includes users and data y Uses HTTP (rules that govern how hypertext web pages are distributed) y TCP/IP (transmission control protocol/internet protocol)specifies how data is transmitted and how computers connect and receive information z WWWW or the Web - An application (“the Wonderful Word Wide Web” or just the World Wide Web) that uses the Internet to distribute hypertext documents
Web Applications vs. Servers z Web Application - A Web sit that contains pages and programs y Graphics objects, Javascripts, and forms are combined to form an application z Web Server - A computer that lets you test and distribute web applications y Listens for requests for Web pages from users. y Finds the page and sends it to the user’s browser using the HTTP communication method. y The browser interprets the html tags and displays the page on the screen.
Client-Server Model z Client - you and your computer y A client (that’s you) requests information from a server. y The program is downloaded and executed on your computer. y Includes Java. Script, VBScript, Java applets, Active. X programs z Server - responds to your request y Web server receives the request and performs processing necessary to create the Web page and sends the page to you. y Server-side programs include scripts such as active server pages (ASP) SSIs, and compiled programs such as Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and ISAPI and NSAPI (service application programming interface).
Search Engines and Locations z Search engine - A utility that lets users enter queries y Provides a list of matches from its database y Usually provides a relevancy score for each match and a clickable URL z URL - Uniform Resource Location y Address where a page, picture, or sound can be found on the WWW. z Search Domain - An area you select for your search, including newsgroups, the Web, or the Internet.
How does a search engine search? y. User interface - Contains a form that lets the user enter queries or requests for information y. Searcher - A program that uses the search engine’s index and database to look for data y. Evaluator - Determines the relevancy of the items (URLs) returned by the search y. Gatherer - A program that traverses the Web and collect information about documents. (aka robots, crawlers, and spiders)
