Manlift Safety Awareness OBJECTIVES • To enhance Manlift operator skills • To reduce Hazards associated with the Manlift. • To Reduce Hazards associated to the workplace. • To reduce General Hazards that apply to our job site.

Manlift Safety Awareness PURPOSE • The purpose of this course is to familiarize people who use Manlifts and Elevated Platforms on the rules, regulations and proper application of safe work practices and operating procedures involved in day-to-day activities. It is designed for individuals who have a basic understanding of, or who are actively involved in these activities.

Manlift Safety Awareness Before an operation starts, the operator must: • Be qualified and Certified according to local instructions and DEL project rules. • Read and understand the operating instructions and safety rules for the equipment being used. • Understand all decals, warnings and instructions displayed on the work platform.

Manlift Safety Awareness Before each work shift starts, the operator must: • Inspect for defects that would affect a lift's safe operation. Be alert for cracked welds or other structural defects, leaks in hydraulics, damaged control cables, loose wires, or bad tires. • Test the controls to make sure they work. • Check the operating condition of the brakes, lights and other automotiveoperating accessories, such as horns and warning devices.

Manlift Safety Awareness Before each elevation, the operator must: • Check for overhead obstructions and powered cables. • Elevate the work on only a firm, level surface. • Make sure the load and its distribution on the platform is according to the manufacturer's rated capacity. Never exceed the rated work load. • Use the outriggers or stabilizers, if required, according to the manufacturer's instructions. • Make sure guard rails on the platform are installed correctly, and the gates or openings are closed. • Check all occupants' safety belts or harnesses and lanyards, making sure they are attached correctly. Don't attach lanyards to objects outside the basket or to the lift.

Manlift Safety Awareness Before and while operating a lift with its platform elevated, the operator must: • Look in the direction of and keep a clear view of the path of travel. Make sure the path is firm and level. • Maintain a safe distance from obstacles (ahead and above), debris, holes, depressions, ramps, and other hazards. • Set the brakes and chock the wheels once stopped.

Manlift Safety Awareness • • • While operating a lift, the operator must not: Use ladders or makeshift devices on the platform so workers can reach higher. Climb up or down extendable arms. Sit on or climb on the edge of the basket. Delay reporting any defects or malfunctions to the supervisor. Speeding while moving.

Manlift Safety Awareness • Before Starting the activity a tool box talk must be held • Wearing full PPE ( all ). • Do not wear safety harnesses or lanyards attached to the lift. • • Operating zone ( RADIUS) must be barricaded. Make sure a supervisor watches the lift. Banks man must wear Orange Fluorescent vest. When people are working on a ship's sides, the supervisor must ensure the deck above the lift is free from hazards, especially falling objects. • Only maximum two persons inside the man basket.

Continued • Each mobile work platform will be equipped with an automatic , audible and visible warning device that activate when the platform exceeds 110% of it’s safe working load ( SWL). • Scissor type mobile work platform will be fitted with guards to eliminate pinch points. Where pinch points can not be properly guarded , they will be marked with high visibility safety tape. • Mobile work platform will be equipped with a portable fire extinguisher.

Man lift Safety Awareness JGC Management Roles and responsibilities : § a/ shall ensure procedures are developed and effectively implemented. Procedure : JGC will appoint a suitable person who is trained and experienced to implement and maintain procedures in order to ensure the safe use of Man lift equipment. § b/ Shall appoint knowledgeable staff/s to manage and maintain the safe use of man lift equipment on the construction site.

Ensure man lift is certified safe for use by a competent person with valid document. Ensure a regular ( daily ) inspection by the operator. Ensure all operators are trained and qualified with valid current certificate. Ensure a monthly inspection of the man lift and gears by ( appointed person ). Ensure all operators and passengers involved have received a JGC or a manufacturer Training.

Suspended Platform What should you do when working on a suspended platform? • Ensure that platform is installed and maintained according to job requirements, safety regulations, standards and the manufacturer's specifications. • Inspect all equipment before erecting and before each shift. • Use a separate safety harness attached to an independent life line for each worker. Maintain lanyard attachment at highest point possible. • Ensure that suspended platform roof beams and attachments are secure. • Ensure that the roof or parapet wall is structurally sound to support either outriggers or cornice hooks. • Check for kinked or damaged ropes. • Secure all ropes at anchor ends.

Suspended Platform Working on Suspended platform continued: • Ensure that all safety equipment, stops, override switches and brakes function properly. • Prevent contact between welding or grinding equipment and wire safety or suspension ropes. • Secure hand tools to the platform. • Ensure that power source is secured and properly grounded. • Secure platform when not in use. • Ensure that guardrails and toe boards are in place. • Extend suspension ropes completely to the ground or terminate with wire rope clips to prevent the stage from running off the end of the ropes. • Test by raising the fully loaded platform a few feet off the ground before going aloft.

Suspended Platform • • • What should you not do on working on suspended platform: ? Test by raising the fully loaded platform a few feet off the ground before going aloft. Do not exceed platform load capacity. Do not enter or leave the platform other than at ground level or at other safe access points. Do not allow electric cables or connections to lie in gutters or other areas where water can collect. Do not work near exposed electrical circuits or equipment. Do not join platforms unless they are designed for this purpose. Do not use damaged or defective equipment. Do not alter, substitute or remove components of platform. Do not use life line for raising or lowering tools or materials.

Suspended Platform

Manbaskets (Personnel Platforms) • Rule #1 - May only be used when there is NO OTHER safe means of performing the work! Manbaskets are the tool of last resort.

Man baskets shouldn’t be used to hoist material

Suspended Personnel Platforms Design: • Support 5 times intended load • Guardrail, enclosed from midrail to toe board, grab rail installed inside • Hard hats and overhead protection • Welding by qualified welder • Weight of platform and rated capacity marked

Suspended Personnel Platforms • Master link or shackle for bridle legs • Eyes fabricated with thimbles • Rigging used only for personnel basket • Basket landed or secured before entry • Employees tied off to basket

Safe operating procedure for hoist and hoist tower: a) Hoist and Hoist tower will be erected on firm, solid and level ground. b) The cage or car of hoist or hoist tower erected with intention of carrying passengers will be installed with effective gates to prevent persons from falling. such cage or car will be installed with interlocking device to allow the gate to open only at designated landing platform. All sides of the man cage will be enclosed by a top rail of not less than 1. 1 meters or 43” from the floor including intermediate guardrail and a toe board.

continued c) Gates will be kept closed at all times except when the required to open for immediate movement of material or passengers when the cage or the car is at the landing platform. d) Material and tools to be transported will be secured. e) The crane hook used for lifting and lowering a man cage will be equipped w/ a safety latch, or “moussed” to prevent displacement of the lifting eye from the hook. f) A Minimum two tag lines will be used to control lateral movement of the man cage.
