Males and Females Resting HR, Active HR, and RPE Before and After Participating in Just Dance 4 Austin Frawley, EXS 111 -603, 5/3/17 Abstract Exergaming is the activity of playing video games that include physical exertion and is thought of as being some form of exercise. We used exergaming activities such as Just Dance 4 to assess our resting heart rate, active heart rate, and radius of perceived exertion. We executed this study to see the difference in heart rate and radius of perceived exertion in males versus females. Hypotheses Going into the study, I feel that female would have a lower resting heart rate than of a resting heart rate of a male. This is because females tend to be smaller in body size and will make them have a lower resting HR. I also feel that males’ active heart rates would be higher than an active heart rate of a female. This is because males take games more seriously and will try harder to beat their opponent. Lastly, I feel that males’ radius of perceived exertion would be higher because males are more likely to be more competitive and have higher intensity than females at games. Methods and Results The study was directed on 67 undergraduate students, which included 24 females and 43 males. The students participating measured their resting heart rate before playing Just Dance 4 and then measured their active heart rate, as well as radius of perceived exertion. The participants measured their resting and active heart rate using heart rate monitors and they used the Borg scale to measure radius of perceived exertion (RPE). Conclusion This study displays that Just Dance 4 provides higher active hearts for females than males while dancing to songs. The study also delivers that males have a higher radius of perceived exertion than females. The results of this study proposes that Just Dance 4 can be used as some form of exercise to get an individuals heart rate up. There needs to be additional studies to observe the association between heart rate and radius of perceived exertion for more intensified activities/games for both females and males. The results concluded from this are that females resting HR averaged 79. 7 bpm, an active HR of 84 bpm, and an average RPE of 3. 5. Males had an average resting heart rate of 73 bpm, an average active HR of 64 bpm, and an average RPE of 2. 75.
