DISCLAIMER Presentation created to demonstrate study abroad program cost and aid availability examples only. Each student has a unique financial aid award. Students should always meet with a financial aid counselor once they’ve identified a program to discuss actual costs and actual aid availability. This should definitely be done before committing any financial resources. The Sharks Abroad team and the Office of Financial Aid makes every effort to thoroughly explain the study abroad financial aid process but students are responsible for confirming their understanding prior to participating in any study abroad program.
FINANCIAL AID AVAILABILITY
Availability for study abroad depends on the type of aid*. Federal Aid Florida State Aid • • • FEDERAL PELL GRANTS FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT (FSEOG) FEDERAL TEACH GRANT FEDERAL SUBSIDIZED LOANS FEDERAL UNSUBSIDIZED LOANS • • • NSU Institutional Aid FLORIDA BRIGHT FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP Exception: MINORITY TEACHER NSU aid that is provided explicitly for EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP BENACQUISTO study abroad • PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARSHIP • Stolzenberg Doan • PRESIDENT’S PREMIER FLORIDA RESIDENT ACCESS • Panama Endowment SCHOLARSHIP GRANT (FRAG) • • DEAN’S SCHOLARSHIP Honors Awards FLORIDA STUDENT • RAZOR’S EDGE ASSISTANCE GRANT (FSAG) JOSE MARTI SCHOLARSHIP These CAN be used, of course! CHALLENGE GRANT FLORIDA PRE-PAID / *And the thorough, accurate, and timely completion of all required financial aid paperwork.
Enrollment Requirements • Just like at NSU, you must maintain enrollment requirements to be eligible for financial aid. • Enrollment requirements vary between ½, ¾, and full-time (12 cr). • Most study abroad programs are designed to ensure full-time enrollment. • Students may have other reasons for wanting to ensure they are full-time (insurance, etc. ) Federal Aid Florida State Aid • • • FEDERAL PELL GRANTS FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT (FSEOG) FEDERAL TEACH GRANT FEDERAL SUBSIDIZED LOANS FEDERAL UNSUBSIDIZED LOANS • • • FLORIDA BRIGHT FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP MINORITY TEACHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP BENACQUISTO SCHOLARSHIP FLORIDA RESIDENT ACCESS GRANT (FRAG) FLORIDA STUDENT ASSISTANCE GRANT (FSAG) JOSE MARTI SCHOLARSHIP CHALLENGE GRANT FLORIDA PREPAID / External Aid EMPLOYERS HIGH SCHOOLS NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS • BANKS • OTHER PREPAID Requirements are set by each agency but typically only require for a student to be making continued progress on their degree. • • •
Summer study abroad aid works like summer aid at NSU: • Limited to federal/state aid. • Only available if you haven’t maxed your aid availability yet. • Aid max is based on educational expenses AND federal/state maximums. • Adding a summer program will increase your annual educational expenses, so additional aid may be available. • If you already hit the maximum allowed within the Fall and Winter terms, no additional aid will be available even when you add a summer program. Enrollment Requirements Students must earn a minimum of 6 CREDITS over the summer to be eligible for summer aid. The six credits could be earned through a combination of study abroad and NSU coursework.
STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM COSTS
PROGRAM FEES Each program includes different items in their cost of attendance but typically include: • Tuition Don’t forget to calculate the exchange • Fees rate if the price is not in U. S. dollars! • Housing (www. xe. com) • Insurance Some may also include some or all meals, books, local transportation, and even travel excursions. Don’t forget personal expenses. This may include airfare, meals that are not included, local transportation, etc. While you are abroad you do not pay tuition/fees to NSU (unless you’re taking courses here, too).
Step 1: Find the program cost. www. nova. edu/internationalaffairs/ Actual Cost What do we need to know?
https: //studiesabroad. com/enrolled/study/additional. Expenses Don’t forget the additional expenses! Actual Cost • • • Books: $100 Misc: $1300 ($100/week – 13 weeks) Airfare: $775 Travel Expenses: $135 Meals: $585 ($45/week – 13 weeks) PERSONAL: $2, 895
Step 2: Estimate your aid availability. http: //sharklink. nova. edu/ Actual Cost
Step 2: Estimate your aid availability. http: //sharklink. nova. edu/ ? ? Actual Cost FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID $4, 171 / STATE FINANCIAL AID EXTERNAL FINANCIAL AID INSTITUTIONAL AID
Step 3: Program Cost - Aid Availability = Cost After Aid $9, 295 (program fee) + $2, 895 (personal expenses) = $12, 190 (program cost) $1, 972 (scholarships/grants) + $2, 199 (loans) = $4, 171 (aid availability*) $8, 019 (cost after aid*) In this situation, the student has significant unmet need and is likely going to be offered additional federal loans to help make the difference. Federal loans will be a good option for many but what other options are there for students who are unable or unwilling to use loans? Actual Cost *IMPORTANT: These figures allow you to ESTIMATE your costs only! The current federal & state aid on your financial aid award are based on NSU’s cost of attendance! Significant program cost changes are likely to impact award availability! An appointment with Financial Aid or completion of the appropriate financial aid paperwork is the only wait to know actual aid availability.

Program Provider Some programs have higher fees but offer substantial financial aid, some which is guaranteed. (CIEE, AIFS, etc. ) Program provider aid is often less competitive than other aid sources. (Exception: fully funded opportunities) Some programs offer lower fees but don’t have (m)any scholarships. (KEI Abroad, Sol Education Abroad, etc. ) Pricing Factors Remember: Cost doesn’t necessarily mean quality but it is important to consider ‘apples to apples’ what is included in each program fee?
