Making Descriptive Paragraphs
When and why should we use descriptive paragraphs? �Answering What, Who, and some How questions. �What is humunukuapua‘a? �Who is Queen Lili‘uokalani? �How is living on Moloka‘i? �Introducing things to people. �Beginnings of essays are called? �Setting the background in a story.
Sample descriptive paragraph Hula is a dance form accompanied by chant or song. It was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally settled there. The chant or song is called a mele. The hula dramatizes or comments on the mele.
Where does this paragraph come from? �It came from an American Studies paper on the importance of hula to Hawaiian culture. �It came from an article in an encyclopedia. �It comes from the beginning of an instructional book on hula. �It comes from a tourist guide. �It comes from Wikipedia. �The answer is Wikipedia.
What is the right order for these sentences? (Use the handout to write your answers. ) A It occupies most of an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean, southwest of the continental United States, southeast of Japan, and northeast of Australia. B Hawaiʻi has over a million permanent residents along with many visitors and U. S. military personnel. C Due to its mid-Pacific location, Hawaiʻi has many North American and Asian influences along with a vibrant native culture. D Hawaiʻi is the newest of the 50 U. S. states, and is the only state made up entirely of islands. E Hawaiʻi’s natural beauty, warm tropical climate, inviting waters and waves, and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for tourists, surfers, biologists, and volcanologists alike. The original order is: D, A, E, C, A but other orders will still work.

New Terms �The basic sentence that comes at the beginning of a paragraph is called… �A topic sentence tells your reader what the paragraph is about. It tells the main idea of the paragraph. �The basic sentence that comes at the end of a paragraph is called… �A concluding sentence tells the main idea a second time. It often summarizes the paragraph.
Pair Work (using the worksheet) �Working with a partner, pick a topic to discuss and write a descriptive paragraph together. �Try to pick a topic that you both know well. �Make sure it follows the basic shape of a descriptive paragraph either using a triangle or a cup design. �One of you will have to read it aloud to the class so decide who does the reading early.
