SEAFOOD AND FISH ARE IN TROUBLE • A small percentage of the shrimp we eat is wild caught, where giant trawling nets are used that scrape the bottom of the ocean but also pick up porpoise, dolphins, turtles and shark. There is 5 lbs of bycatch for every 1 lb of shrimp – that is not sustainable. • Much of the shrimp we eat comes from farms in tropical regions where problems from slave labor, food safety and environmental issues are frequently reported. Shrimp farming has contributed to destruction of mangrove forests and wetlands to make way to pollution from organic waste, chemicals and antibiotics.
