Make sure you have paper and a pen ready Have a go at these questions while you’re waiting for the session to start GCSE Preparation Course L 6: QUADRATIC EQUATIONS 2 Ask me to go over any questions by typing in the chat box There may be a short delay. @mrskslightbulbmoments https: //mrskslightbulbmoments. wordpress. com/
The Quadratic Formula Note: The equation must be in this form in order to use the formula We can use the quadratic formula to find our solutions when a quadratic expression does not factorise This bit (b 2 – 4 ac) is called the discriminant and tells us how many solutions there are It is most commonly found on a calculator paper, but you may need to use it on a noncalculator paper and leave your answer as a surd @mrskslightbulbmoments if b 2 – 4 ac < 0 then there are no real solutions if b 2 – 4 ac = 0 then there is one solutions if b 2 – 4 ac > 0 then there are two solutions https: //mrskslightbulbmoments. wordpress. com/
The Quadratic Formula Example Your turn… @mrskslightbulbmoments https: //mrskslightbulbmoments. wordpress. com/
HINT The trick is to spot when the question is asking you to use the formula: • The answer is not a whole number (dp or sf) • It asks you to leave it as a surd • The equation does not factorise (easily) @mrskslightbulbmoments https: //mrskslightbulbmoments. wordpress. com/ Have a go at these questions after the session if you need more practice
