Introduction An essential part of a Room Attendant’s job is to make guests bed according to approved method. Each organization might have a different way of setting pillows or might have a different way of arranging pillows, however the method of making the bed remains consistent in any organization. A cleaning job is not officially over until the bed is made. It is the focal point in a room and thus should depict class and sophistication. Resource 2. 4: Clean Bedroom and Public Areas 3
Always make beds consistent with approved methods. Bottom sheet corners must be mitred. Top sheet and blanket must be tucked in. Bedspread must be placed on the bed with opening away from the floor. In addition to covering pillows, bedspreads must also be tucked under pillows and allow to hang about 1. 5 cm from the ground all around. Resource 2. 4: Clean Bedroom and Public Areas 4
Pillows must be placed in pillowcases with the corners filled and the open and neatly folded. Pillows must be correctly positioned and the bed smooth and well made. Resource 2. 4: Clean Bedroom and Public Areas 5
Steps to making the bed 1. Remove personal items from the bed 2. Remove the bedspread and blanket 3. Strip the bed of dirty linen 4. Remove pillows 5. Check mattress pad & mattress if there is any damage. Resource 2. 4: Clean Bedroom and Public Areas 6
6. Make the bed / miter the corners - mitering: is a simple way to make a smooth, neat, professional corner. 7. Place the bottom sheet on the mattress and miter the corners . 8. Place a top sheet on the bed, wrong-side up 9. Place the blanket on top of the sheet 10. At the head of the bed, turn the top sheet over the blanket Resource 2. 4: Clean Bedroom and Public Areas 7
11. Miter the top sheet and the blanket and tuck them along the side of the bed. 12. Center the bedspread over the bed, fold the bedspread down from the head for pillows. 13. Bed Making Tips: (1)Start cleaning from the bed is important in stayover rooms because if the guest returns while cleaning, the freshly made bed will give the room a neat appearance. (2)The most efficient way of making a bed is to completely finish one side before beginning on the next. This saves time walking back and forth around the bed. § Make sure all the fresh linen to go onto the bed is placed onto a chair, table or couch while you are making the bed – it must never be left on the floor. § When you have finished making the bed, step back and inspect it to make sure it is right, then adjust as required. A guest has left the room, it is vital that fresh bedding is used. But what if it is an “occupied ‟ room where the guest is staying for more than one day? Many hotels have “Request Cards‟ which allow the guest to decide if they require their bedding to be changed. These cards are commonly found in hotel rooms throughout the world. Simply, guests place this card on the bed, which identifies that the guest would like their bed linen changed. If this card is not placed on the bed, the existing bed linen will be used. Resource 2. 4: Clean Bedroom and Public Areas 21
üRemove pillows and place them on a clean surface, checking for stains or need for replacement. ü Remove or pull back any blankets or duvets, again checking for stains or need for replacement. üStraighten bottom sheet, again checking for stains or need for replacement. Take special note of the preferences of the guest. Before making the bed, check to identify preferences including: 1. If they have removed the blanket or duvet, you may wish to place this in the cupboard or folded back at the end of the bed . 2. If they have more pillows, make the bed and position the pillows 3. If items such as books, magazines, glasses, clothes or other personal items were found accordingly. on the bed, place them neatly back on the bed in a similar position.
