Andrew Jackson - 1828 - 36 ●Sought a stronger executive branch and a weaker Congress ●Democratic Party ●Spoils System - Gov’t jobs given to those who help in the campaign. ●Favored more power with the States (ex. A & S act)
Jacksonian Democracy (political philosophy) • Expands suffrage (voting) to the common man (no property requirement but only white men) and majority rule. – Presented himself as a common farmer in contrast to the aristocracy of the past.

Nullification Crisis • Congress passed tariffs on imported goods, to protect Am. from competition. • South Carolina refused to pay the Tariff because they felt it benefited the North • Andrew Jackson tried to make them pay • Finally they compromised by lowering the tariff. • How did this show states rights?
The surrender of life is nothing to sinking down into acknowledgment of inferiority. May we all remember that it can only be preserved by respecting the rights of the States, and distributing equally the benefits and burdens of the Union.

Missouri Compromise - 1820 • Missouri wanted to apply for statehood (the 24 th). • States were concerned about adding another slave state • Maine was added as a separate free state and Missouri as a slave state.
• After the Mexican American War there was a lot of new land to become states • The big question: – Will they be slave or free?
• Wilmot Proviso • A Northern Senator tried to pass a bill calling for no slavery in the new territory gained from the war with Mexico—the Wilmot Proviso • It failed to pass by only one vote. The votes were very sectional –North for and South against • What did this show the Southern States?
The Compromise of 1850 • California wanted to join the union as a free state • The South did not want this because it would up set the balance of free and slave states • Compromise: California was admitted and the fugitive slave law was enforced
