Discussion! What do you think are the most common complaints that Landlords have about tenants?
COMMON LANDORD ISSUES – Rent not being paid on time or at all – Smoking inside the house – Lack of cleanliness – Too many guests/overnight guest
AVOIDING CONFLICT PROBLEM Rent not being paid on time, or at all. POSSIBLE REASON - Issues with OW Budgeting Payment inconvenience SOLUTION - Budgeting (immediately putting money aside for rent) If on OW, ask worker to set up direct pay Set up E-Transfer for easy payments Smoking inside house - Weather Sickness Not knowing rules Ask landlord for designated smoking area Lack of cleanliness - Lack of life skills Roommates mess Many reasons! - Create a cleaning schedule Reach out for assistance Too many/overnight guests - Avoiding isolation Socializing - Become clear about rules Find alternative places to hang out
DISCUSSION What kind of issues come up with roommates?
Common Issues with Roommates – Not cleaning up – Taking things that aren’t theirs (food, personal items) – Attitude (personality clashes) – Having guests over – Not contributing enough – Irresponsible
Many of these issues can be solved with: COMMUNICATION
Communication with difficult roommates: – Talk about small issues before they turn into big issues – Do your best to be up front in a respectful, non-aggressive way – Come up with a fair plan for cleaning, shopping, etc. – Be open to negotiation – Be ready for a roommate to have the same type of conversations with you – Work together!
Other tips for dealing with roommates: – If you are able to choose your roommate, be careful with who you pick – Ensure that you are choosing a reliable, responsible roommate that you trust – Sometimes picking someone that you know too well will result in a strain on your relationship with them – If you have the choice, the less roommates the better! – Make sure that when you go to a viewing for a room rental, ask if your door locks – Write your name on all of the things that you don’t want to be touched
Discussion Can anyone else think of any helpful tips for dealing with landlords or roommates?
