Obesity Prevention Education & Programs 52 Let’s Go! 5 -2 -1 -0 school, childcare, afterschool and pediatric programs are registered, receiving policy, training, material and promotional support to promote healthy choices. New community prevention and chronic disease programming includes: Diabetes Prevention Program, Healthy Weight for a Lifetime, Lifestyle Choices, Walk with a Doc, Food for Health, Prescription for Health. Group obesity visits have begun. SNAP Education: Community nutrition education and cooking classes. 842 classes held, 9, 506 participants. Partnerships & Grants Maine Prevention Funder for Let’s Go!: Maine. Health, via Maine CDC SNAP Education Funder: University of New England, via Maine DHHS Access Health Community Health Coalition – increasing access to physical activity & healthy eating through community collaboration Local Land Trusts, Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, Local Municipalities, Downtown Associations, Recreation Departments, Bike and Ped Committees, Clubs, and Organizations, Trail Associations 14
Tobacco Use Prevention, Cessation and Promotion of Smoke Free Places Education & Programs Expanded Mid Coast Hospital tobacco treatment (adding 7 cessation specialists) and trained school staff in youth cessation. Strengthened policies in schools, agencies and multi unit housing to prevent second hand smoke exposure. All town rec departments have comprehensive policies. WIC, Maine. Families, Head. Start and veterinarian staff trained to discuss risks and quitting options with clients. Youth trained to discuss risks and quitting options with peers. Information on electronic devices developed and shared widely. Lung Cancer screenings and monitoring of 125 patients through Mid Coast Medical Group Pulmonology. Partnerships & Grants Maine Prevention Services Funder – Maine. Health via Maine CDC Maine. Health Center for Tobacco Independence 15
Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment Education & Programs Centers for Disease Control and Prevention opioid prescribing guidelines adopted. Rapid access to evidence based treatment at Mid Coast Addiction Resource Center, including treatment beginning in the Emergency Department and new substance exposed infant protocol adopted. Partnerships & Grants Maine Prevention Partner: University of New England Drug Free Community federal funding (SAMHSA) Access Health – coordinates community coordinated substance abuse prevention, with a focus on youth. Since 2015: • Decreased access to substances via home, stores, older friends • Increase monitoring by parents and law enforcement (381 tips) • Campaigns to celebrate the majority of youth who do not use • Increased safeguarding & disposal of medications (10, 311 pounds collected) • Stronger school policies • Youth deferred to education vs suspension/citation: 19 classes, 120 participants 16
Child & Adolescent Mental Health Education & Programs 3 year Youth Mental Health First Aid and mental health literacy grant secured – 19 trainings held, 319 people trained Behavioral Health Clinicians integrated in all primary care practices, pediatrics, Women’s Health, and Neurology Analysis of local adolescent treatment barriers conducted, action plan created Partnerships & Grants Local Community Mental Health Taskforce continues to meet quarterly Midcoast Community Alliance created to prevent youth suicide 17
Early Childhood Development Education & Programs Multi year home visiting pilot completed, work continuing with United Way to enhance pathways for pediatric referrals to home visiting Healthy Generations continues to support moms with substance exposed infants Partnerships & Grants United Way – home visiting pilot, Diaper Project, promotion of VROOM app “brain builders with free activities” for caregivers of young children 18
