WHAT IS AN OUTLINE? • An outline presents a picture of the main ideas and the supporting details of any subject. • An outline has hierarchical structure: it starts with the most general idea and gets increasingly more specific as needed.
PURPOSES OF OUTLINES • To show what a topic includes, how topics are related to each other, and the relative importance of topics within a piece of writing • To convey the general plan of the material included in a speech or written work • To organize thoughts during the pre-writing process
KINDS OF OUTLINES • Topic: Headings are expressed as single words or brief phrases • Sentence: All headings are written in complete sentences
TERMS • Division: When a main idea is divided, it should be divided into two or more sub points. No sub point stands alone. • Subordination: The information in the headings should be more general, while the information in the subheadings should be more specific • Parallelism: Each heading should take the same grammatical form.
