Main Idea “A Main Idea is the central or most important idea about a topic that a writer or speaker conveys” (Allen, R 118) Comes from the Old Norse word and the Greek word Ø Meginn strong or powerful Ø Idein to see -can be of any length of text: whole or paragraph -in an essay often found in the topic sentence

Theme is the “underlying message about life or human nature that a writer wants the reader to understand” (Allen, R 114) Comes from the Greek word Ø Theme proposition -usually must be inferred from the text -a universal life message -not specific to this literature -“not to be confused with moral” (Allen, R 114)

Just Like a Crème-Filled Cupcake The crème filling is hidden inside the cupcake. Themes are hidden in the text. The reader must infer the overall message the author is trying to convey.
