Main Idea Why do we need to look for a main idea/point in a text? *Every article or other informative text has a main idea. *The main idea tells you what the text is about. *The main idea is the most important part of a text or a paragraph. * Main ideas help readers remember important information.

Supporting Details The other sentences in the paragraph are called supporting details. These details describe or explain the main idea. They give more information and better understanding of the main idea.

I: Read the paragraph and find the main idea When you see a suspicious object, don’t go near it, even if you just want to see what’s inside. If it’s a bomb, it could explode if you touch it! Instead, call the police immediately and tell them exactly what you see and where you see it. They will come within few minutes and check the suspicious subject.

In the movie, the astronauts get in trouble while they are trying to return to Earth. People in the audience are on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens. What makes it even more exciting is that it is a true story.

In this paragraph: The topic is the movie Apollo 13 The main idea is in the first sentence: Apollo 13 was a blockbuster for the summer of 1995.
