Maintenance can be described as reactive when it is in response to a production line that has stopped due to the failure of a defective part. • Planned/preventative maintenance is described as pro-active and can lead to less failures in a production line due to defective plant. • Some maintenance has to carried out on a production line that has been stopped due to safety reasons. The timing of maintenance activities needs to be planned for when a line is closed or for other reasons, such as staff all being on holiday at the same time or when demand for goods has a seasonally low period. • •
