How the MAIN causes start WWI Nationalism A sense of pride in one’s country’s greatness. • Two examples of how Nationalism caused WW 1: 1. Slavic people wanted to rule themselves, wanted a “nation” of their own. Gavrilo Princip was a Serbian “nationalist”, wanted to support nations of Slavic peoples. “nationalistic feelings” 2. The countries of Europe wanted to show great their countries were. It also wanted to show great their ethnicities were in terms of: – Empires (imperialism) – Military power
How does it link together? • The M. A. I. N causes would have been able to cause WW 1 without the spark (Assassination) • The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand would not have caused WWI if not for the M. A. I. N Causes setting the stage. • Think of it like starting a fire. A fire needs: – BLUE = M. A. I. N Causes / RED = Assassination • Tinder (stuff that is flammable) • Kindling (twigs/branches needed to support the fire) • Wood (needed to keep the fire burning) • Flint (this creates the spark)
The start of WW 1 • The Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand marks the beginning of World War I • June 28, 1914
