Magnetism
Magnetism • Electric charges have electric fields, magnetic poles have magnetic fields • Field lines go from the North pole to the South pole • Opposite poles attract, same poles repel
Magnetism • Magnets will always come with both poles • A magnet with one pole is called a monopole. Mono-poles DO NOT EXIST in nature…. • Even breaking a magnet down to its atoms will not give you a mono-pole. This suggests atoms themselves are magnets.
Magnetism • Moving electrical charges produce a magnetic field, which is relative to the motion of the observer. • Permanent magnets, such as those made of Iron also have magnetic fields. This is the concept of ferromagnetism.
Magnetism • All atoms are magnets. Since they have charges in motion, they make magnetic fields. • Motion comes from • The electrons orbiting the nucleus • The spinning of the electrons • The spinning of the nucleus • These add up to a resultant magnetic field. If all atoms add up in the same direction, the object will have a magnetic field itself.

Magnetism • We use the variable B to measure the magnetic field. • The units for the magnetic field is the Tesla. 1 Tesla = 1 Newton / (meters * Amperes). • The direction of the magnetic field made from a wire carrying current can be found using the right hand rule.
Magnetic Force • A charged particle will only interact with a magnetic field if it moves within the magnetic field. • The force is greatest when the particle moves perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field line. • The force, the direction of the magnetic field, and the motion of the charged particle are all perpendicular to each other.
