Magnetic separation Overview • Material is separated based on magnetic susceptibility • Highly magnetic material is removed using a hand magnet • Weakly magnetic materials are separated by a Frantz magnetic separator

Magnetic separation Hand Magnet • Spread the sample in a single layer on a

Magnetic separation Hand Magnet • Spread the sample in a single layer on a piece of paper • Cover the hand magnet in weighing paper and pass over the sample • Set the magnet of a second piece of weighing paper, hold the first down and remove the magnet • Do not allow sample to contact the magnet directly as it is very difficult to remove.

Magnetic separation Frantz set up • The Frantz produces a strong magnetic field over

Magnetic separation Frantz set up • The Frantz produces a strong magnetic field over a ramp that holds magnetically susceptible material, while non magnetic material falls to a second ramp • Set the angle of the ramp using the black rotating handle, typical angles are 10° - 25° • Adjust the strength of the magnetic field using the current knob *do not exceed 1. 3 A* • Set the sample constrainers in place at the end of the ramps Current Adjustment Magnet current

Magnetic separation Frantz sample separation • Add sample to the feed shoe. • The rate of sample introduction is controlled by the angle of the feed outlet shoot and the strength of feed vibration • The speed at which material moved down the ramp is controlled by the strength of the chute vibration • Set the vibrations such that material is able to separate on the ramp and is not introduced so fast as to cause clogs.
